10 People, One Cottage and Plenty to Do: Your Group Getaway at Millstream Farm
There’s a particular challenge that comes with organising a group getaway.
Finding somewhere everyone actually wants to go.
The anglers want to fish. Someone wants to walk. Someone else wants activities. And there’s almost always one person whose entire holiday plan involves a comfortable chair, a good book and as few commitments as possible.
At Millstream Farm, that works surprisingly well.
Our cottages sleep up to 10 guests, so there’s room to bring the family, the friends, the fishing crew or a combination of all three.
And once you arrive, nobody has to agree on what to do next.

The anglers will disappear first
Let’s be realistic.
If you have keen fly-fishers in the group, you probably won’t see much of them after breakfast.
Fly-fishing is a big part of life at Millstream, with the farm’s dams giving anglers plenty of opportunity to spend their mornings, afternoons and, if they get their way, most of the time in between with a rod in hand.
And if you’re travelling with a particularly enthusiastic angler, prepare yourself for the phrase:
“Just one more cast.”
It rarely means one.
Not fishing? You won’t be bored
One of the reasons Millstream works so well for a group getaway is that 10 people don’t need to have the same idea of a holiday.
While the anglers head for the dams, everyone else has options.
Go horse riding. Take on one of the walking trails, ranging from around 2 km to 8 km. Grab the binoculars and see how many of the 250+ bird species recorded around Millstream you can identify. Play tennis, squash or pickleball.
Or find a sunny spot, open your book and politely decline all invitations to participate.
That counts too.
Bring your walking shoes
A stay at Millstream is a good excuse to leave the car parked and explore on foot.
Our walking trails range from shorter outings to longer routes of approximately 8 km, so you can choose according to how energetic everyone is feeling that morning.
Although, as any group holiday proves, the words “let’s go for a quick walk” should always be treated with some suspicion.
Things might get competitive
Fishing isn’t the only activity capable of bringing out a competitive streak.
There’s tennis, squash and pickleball too.
What starts as a casual game has a habit of becoming considerably less casual once someone starts keeping score.
Choose your doubles partner carefully.
Family harmony is not guaranteed.
And then there are the people who came here to do... nothing
Every group has one.
While everyone else is discussing fishing conditions, walking routes and who booked the horses, they’ve already found the best chair.
And they’re not moving.
Some of the best Millstream days don’t need an itinerary.
Make coffee and sit outside. Read the book you’ve been carrying around for three months. Light the fire when Highlands decides summer is cancelled for the afternoon. Have a braai. Pour a drink and watch the sun go down.
Then wait for the anglers to return and explain, in extraordinary detail, their fishing stories.
Ten people. One cottage. Ten different ideas of a holiday.
That’s exactly why a Millstream group getaway works.
Someone can be up before sunrise and at the dam while someone else is still asleep.
The kids can find something to do. The competitive ones can find someone to challenge. The walkers can disappear onto a trail. The birders can grab their binoculars.
And eventually everyone ends up back at the cottage.
Usually around the braai.
Usually hungry.
Make a Dullstroom weekend of it
Millstream Farm is also close enough to Dullstroom to add a morning or afternoon in town to your stay.
Stop for coffee or lunch, browse the shops and spend some time exploring one of Mpumalanga’s best-known country towns before heading back to the farm.
Then it’s back to the important decisions.
Which dam tomorrow?
Who’s playing pickleball?
And whose turn is it to light the braai?
